Penonomé is the capital of the Panamanian province of Coclé, one of the nine province of Panama. It can be easily reached by the Pan American highway and two lane, paved roads in excellent condition in about 2 hours driving time from Panama City. Penonomé is located on the Zaratí river in central Coclé. The origin of the name of this town comes from the words "penó Nomé". Nome was a chief of a local native American tribe, who was put to death by the Spanish colonial officials. "Penó Nomé" means "Nome was executed."
Penonome, while quaint and well manicured provides the area with all the necessities of living. The area has very developed municipal and business infrastructure. Penonome has numerous grocery stores, bakeries, pharmacies, hardware stores, banks, clothing stores, hotels, gas stations etc...
In the summer, Penonome is the site for a very large carnival celebration which attracts people from all over Panama.
Within an easy 30 to 45 minute drive from Penonome are peaceful, uncrowned, beautiful white sand beaches such as Santa Clara, Playa Blanca, Coronado and the all inclusive Decameron beach resort. In these areas, there are also three, eighteen hole, seventy-two par championship golf courses.
